Small steps toward a useful skill.

What we are working toward

Practice building, tending, and completely extinguishing a small fire with adult supervision.

Everyone gets a job

Kids

Identify and sort tinder, kindling, and fuel. Practice the fire-building steps with a parent, and help with apple preparation or cleanup.

Parents

Practice the skills, supervise children, help tend and extinguish the fire, and lead any cutting, hot cooking, or hot-jar work.

Every child attends with a parent. Both take part in the activity, setup, and cleanup, with tasks matched to ability and appropriate supervision.

Kids and adults put phones away, share tools and turns, and help each other learn. Please read the Family Participation Guidelines together before attending.

How the day takes shape

  1. Meet the materials and talk through the fire area.
  2. Arrange a fire lay before lighting.
  3. Take turns at a supervised fire station.
  4. Practice tending and fully extinguishing the fire.
  5. If the schedule allows, prepare applesauce or explore preserving.
  6. Finish with a shared cleanup and a chance to show a skill.

What to bring

  • Clothes and layers suitable for an outdoor project.
  • A water bottle.
  • A participating parent for every child.

Shared arrangements

  • A shared fire-building activity and cooking setup.
  • Apples and shared apple-preparation equipment for an optional activity.

A skill worth showing

Children can work toward demonstrating that they can build, tend, and extinguish a small fire independently, with an adult present. A certificate records the skill demonstrated; an experienced child can then help an adult teach a younger learner.

If canning joins the day, we will use a tested applesauce method on suitable cooking equipment. Hot-jar work is led by adults. The full processing and cooling steps need time, so jars would stay with the host to cool before collection.

Details still taking shape

Start time and session length are still being arranged. Fire building is the main activity; applesauce and canning are optional and depend on time and equipment. Exact venue details go to participating families.

Event-specific costs have not been announced. This page describes the plan and does not reserve a place.
